If you’re a garage rock junkie, chances are you’ve heard Charles Moothart shred—hard. After being heavily involved in the garage rock scene around Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin, Moothart stepped into the spotlight with the solo alias CFM (short for Charles Francis Moothart). Following a breakup in 2016, he retreated to his home studio and wrote the album 'Still Life of Citrus & Slime'. A year later he returned with 'Dichotomy Desaturated', another heady collection of Nuggets-leaning songs. While both albums were solo efforts, Moothart assembled a touring band of outsiders including high school friend Michael Anderson, along with Tyler Frome and powerhouse drummer Thomas Alvarez (Audacity).
Fuzz is Ty Segall (drums/vocals), Charlie Moothart (guitar/vocals), and Chad Ubovich (bass). Theyíre heavy-rock lifers ñ three California-bred dudes who have been refining their riffs and getting weird together since high school which wasn't that long ago, actually). Fuzz was formed in/around 2011 as a collaboration between Segall and Moothart, but it's only within the last year that the pair had sufficient time to guide the band out of side-project limbo and into a recording studio. Since then, they have released two singles, "This Time I Got a Reason" (Trouble In Mind) and "Sleigh Ride" (In the Red). Around the time of the second single, Cosio joined on bass.
Ty Segall Ex-Cult's Chris Shaw decided they were going to start a band together when their bands played together in 2013. The band had been in the planning stages for a long time but finally came together in 2015 when they convened in Ty's Los Angeles studio to record an album. Cory Hanson (Wand), Charles Moothart (Fuzz) and Mikal Cronin all got involved at some point. After the addition of Michael Anderson on bass, GØGGS returned in 2018 with 'Pre Strike Sweep', adding a new level of primordial anxiety to their already catastrophic symphony. Here's one West Coast garage supergroup you don't want to miss.
It's hard to keep up with John Dwyer. The prolific Westcoast musician is known for dropping albums a mile a minute, occasionally changing the setup of his band to keep the spirit going. For their 19th full-length album, the band formerly known as Thee Oh Sees (and The Oh Sees and OCS and Orinoka Crash Suite and Orange County Sound) are now just the "Oh Sees". That being said, the twin drummer setup just keeps on doing what it does best: providing an explosive backdrop for whatever out-there sound Dwyer comes up with - be it garage, psychrock, manic folk or spaced-out drones. The result is one of the most exciting live bands you can witness nowadays.
Melbournes powerhouse scuzzy punk rock band who have created a buzz about town with their admittedly EXCELLENT slice of raw rock & roll that doesn't let up for a second over their all-too-brief second LP ‘DIG’. Totally A-grade Aussie punk rock in the vein of the Onyas, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Drunk Mums, etc. Explosive & exciting, this band is not to be missed!
After an insane roadtrip, The Glücks got together as a couple and as a band. Alek and Tina bonded over a love for all things dirty and fuzzy: The Cramps, Stooges, Pebbles/Nuggets garage and punk. Add to that an urge to get away from the “shithole” they grew up in, and you’ve got the recipe for some good infernal rock’n’roll. Even with the mother of all hangovers, the band nailed a full album of eight songs in 2 days. The second album topped that with 11 songs recorded in the same amount of time. 'Run Amok' from 2018 is their most accomplished outing to date, a vibrant heartfelt piece of work filled to the brim with songs for the underdogs, the generation denied... the generation undefined.
