San Francisco's Moon Duo was formed in 2009 by Sanae Yamada and Erik Johnson (Wooden Shjips). Inspired initially by the legendary duo of John Coltrane and Rashied Ali, Moon Duo counts such variant groups as Silver Apples, Royal Trux, Moolah, Suicide, and Cluster as touchstones. Throughout the years have consistently expanded on their core sound of motoric beats, synth bass and Ripley's space guitar. This culminated in 2017's double concept album 'Occult Architecture', based on the Chinese theory of Yin and Yang, light vs. dark. As disorienting as the music can be, the eye-scorching visual live show takes it to a whole new outer dimension.
Wooden Shjips’ rise to prominence from the psychedelic underground to the rock and roll overground has been a steady sojourn. With each consecutive release, the band has found new ways of transforming heady psychedelic rock into minimalist masterpieces, bridging the gap between woozy freeness tightly wound simplicity. Guitarist-singer Ripley Johnson formed the band in San Francisco in 2003, originally conceiving the band as a loose collection of untrained musicians that would gather to jam. Settling into a regular line-up, the band became a live sensation as well as gaining more media attention as their work moved from spaced freakouts to to melodically direct songs.
